The
Bible, Tassie and Carmen Lawrence
The
Aussie Bible is a joke, as is Richard Butler's appointment as Governor
of Tasmania, as is Carmen Lawrence's campaign for the Presidency of the
Australian Labor Party.
Every
Saturday, not long after the sun predictably rises over the far western
reaches of the Pacific Ocean, specifically Manly Beach not more than
a few pleasant blocks from the Jones family home my 4-year-old son
thunders, Buzz Lightyear to infinity and beyond! at a
decibel level capable of making a Led Zeppelin concert seem like so much
background elevator musak.
The dogs are out in Europe the dog days of August, that is. The continent is having a heat wave.
The Howard
government's decision to accede to an unprecedented request to intervene
in the domestic affairs of the small South Pacific nation is a radically
new policy direction for Australia. Prime Minister John Howard calls it
the repudiation of Australia's "do nothing approach".
Whenever
a Government wishes to extricate itself from a difficult domestic industry
economic situation it announces it will have an 'inquiry' - often through
the Productivity Commission.
Yes,
a week is a very long time in politics and the events surrounding the emerging
and daily revelations concerning the major players in the trial leading
to the 3 year sentencing of Pauline Hanson are clearly going to have major
long term political repercussions.
It looks like the pro-trade position can become the unambiguous property of George W. Bush in 2004 if he wants it. The test is the decision on whether the steel tariffs stay or go.
To my mind, two rather dubious provisions of the U.S. Constitution are working together to prevent what could be the single most interesting and exciting presidential electionin American history so far, and indeed, perhaps, ever. I mean, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger vs. Bill Clinton.
How long should we wait before deciding if the Iraq project is a success? And, what is success?
As a
former Californian, I have always thought that East Coasters seem particularly
small and provincial when they lampoon or chastise the Golden State. I suppose
such attitudes are driven by fear of, and envy for, the sheer vivacity of
California life. But as a conservative and fellow citizen (Californians
are also Americans, I would remind my fellow Washington pundits), I take
the recall seriously.
